Ecommerce Development for US Brands and Retailers

Shopify, headless and custom stores built for US sales tax, American payment habits, ADA accessibility and fast mobile checkout.

eCommerce Development for the United States

eCommerce Development, built around how the United States works

American shoppers compare every checkout to the fastest one they have used, usually with Shop Pay, Apple Pay or a saved card. US ecommerce also carries obligations many markets do not: sales tax that varies by state and city, accessibility claims aimed squarely at online stores, and state privacy laws that reach into ad pixels. Nexzem builds Shopify, headless and custom stores for US brands remotely from India.

Unlike the UK or Australia, US prices are shown before tax and tax is added at checkout, so tax calculation is a live system rather than a number baked into the price. That and other US differences are covered below, along with when Shopify or WooCommerce fits and when a headless commerce build is worth the extra engineering.

Sales tax, payments and shipping

Since the Supreme Court's Wayfair decision in 2018, states can require remote sellers to collect sales tax once they pass an economic nexus threshold, and rates vary by state, county and city. We connect stores to Shopify Tax, Stripe Tax, Avalara or TaxJar, handle exemption certificates for wholesale buyers, and make sure refunds reverse tax correctly. Which states you must register in is a question for your accountant.

  • Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal for fast mobile checkout
  • Affirm, Klarna and Afterpay for buy now, pay later
  • UPS, FedEx and USPS rates and labels through ShipStation or Shippo
  • Address validation so parcels are not returned for a missing apartment number
  • California Proposition 65 warnings on product pages where your products require them

Accessibility and privacy for US stores

Online retailers are frequent targets of ADA website claims. We build product pages, filters, carts and checkout to WCAG Level AA, test with screen readers and keyboard only, and avoid accessibility overlay widgets that leave the underlying code unchanged. Our accessibility testing can be rerun after theme or app updates.

Ad pixels and session replay tools can count as selling or sharing personal information under California law. We load tags behind a consent and opt-out layer that honors Global Privacy Control signals, and add the Do Not Sell or Share link and privacy policy hooks your counsel specifies.

Shopify or a custom headless store for a US brand?

Shopify suits most US brands: hosting, PCI scope, checkout and Shop Pay come built in, and apps cover reviews, subscriptions and loyalty. Headless with Shopify, BigCommerce or commercetools makes sense when content, performance or multi-brand needs outgrow themes. We often start on standard Shopify and go headless only when it pays back.

Do you set up sales tax for our store?

We configure and integrate the tax engine, product tax codes, exemptions and reporting exports. Deciding where you have nexus and registering with each state is for you and your accountant; once they confirm the states, we switch collection on and test it with real addresses.

Can you migrate our store from Magento or WooCommerce?

Yes. A migration covers products, customers, order history, URLs with 301 redirects to protect search rankings, and integrations such as ERP or 3PL feeds. We run the old and new stores in parallel before cutover. Our platform migration service details the process.
