eCommerce Development for India

eCommerce Development, built around how India works

Selling online in India brings challenges that templates do not solve: a high share of cash on delivery orders, return-to-origin costs that eat margins, pincode-level serviceability, GST invoices for every order and shoppers who compare your price with Amazon and Flipkart in the next tab. Nexzem builds ecommerce stores for Indian D2C brands, retailers and distributors from Dehradun.

Most D2C brands start well on Shopify, content-led stores often prefer WooCommerce, and distributors with complex pricing may need a custom or B2B ecommerce build. Our Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison explains the main trade-offs.

Payments and cash on delivery

Checkout should offer UPI first, then cards, net banking, card and cardless EMI and pay later options through gateways such as Razorpay, Cashfree or PayU. Cash on delivery stays important outside the metros, but it is where most failed deliveries come from, so we add controls around it.

  • Pincode serviceability checks before checkout
  • OTP or WhatsApp confirmation for COD orders
  • Prepaid nudges such as small COD fees or prepaid-only offers
  • COD limits by pincode, order value or customer history
  • Automatic refund status updates to cut support calls

Shipping, GST and marketplaces

Orders flow to shipping aggregators such as Shiprocket or directly to couriers such as Delhivery and Blue Dart, with tracking updates by SMS and WhatsApp. Every order needs a GST invoice with HSN codes, and e-way bills may be needed for larger consignments. Inventory can sync with Amazon and Flipkart seller accounts, and stores can be prepared for the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) through a seller-side network participant.

Consumer rules and dark patterns

The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules 2020 require seller details, a grievance officer, clear return and refund policies and country of origin information, and Legal Metrology rules require declarations such as MRP and net quantity on product pages. The Central Consumer Protection Authority's dark pattern guidelines rule out false urgency, basket sneaking, drip pricing and hard-to-cancel subscriptions. We build stores that follow them by default. This is general information, not legal advice.

eCommerce Development in India, answered

Something else on your mind? Ask a consultant and get a reply within one business day.

How do you reduce cash on delivery returns in India?

Combine checks before and after checkout: pincode serviceability and risk rules, OTP or WhatsApp order confirmation, incentives to pay online and clear delivery estimates. After dispatch, proactive tracking messages and easy rescheduling reduce failed deliveries. We measure return-to-origin rates by pincode and adjust the rules over time.

Is Shopify a good choice for Indian D2C brands?

For most D2C brands, yes. Shopify works with Indian payment gateways, shipping aggregators and GST invoicing apps, and it reduces hosting and security work. Brands with complex B2B pricing, very large catalogs or heavy customization may be better served by WooCommerce, headless or a custom build.

Can you build an ecommerce app as well as a website?

Yes. Many Indian brands add an Android app once repeat buyers justify it, because apps support push notifications and faster repeat checkout. We build the app on the same backend as the website, so catalog, cart, offers and loyalty points stay in sync across both.
