UI/UX Design for New Zealand Apps and Websites

Clear, accessible interfaces in plain language, with care for te reo Māori and research with the people who will actually use your product.

UI/UX Design for New Zealand

UI/UX Design, built around how New Zealand works

New Zealand users respond well to products that are direct, honest and easy to use, and poorly to clutter, jargon and pushy upsells. Public sector work adds formal expectations: the Plain Language Act 2022 for public service agencies, the Government Web Standards and accessibility for disabled people, including users of New Zealand Sign Language. Our UI/UX design process builds these into the work from the first sketches.

Nexzem's designers work from Dehradun, India. Workshops and design reviews run in your afternoon, and design iterations happen during your night, so revised screens are usually ready to review the next morning. Deliverables are Figma files and a design system that your developers, or ours, can implement directly.

Plain language and accessibility

We write interface copy in plain language: short sentences, everyday words, clear actions on buttons and error messages that explain how to fix the problem. We design to WCAG 2.2 AA, which the Web Accessibility Standard requires, covering contrast, focus states, target sizes, captions and screen reader labels. Services for the public should also consider NZ Sign Language video for key information.

Te reo Māori in the interface

Designing with te reo Māori starts with the basics: fonts that include macrons in every weight, enough space for bilingual headings and layouts that do not break when a Māori word is longer than its English equivalent.

Māori visual elements such as patterns and motifs carry meaning and should only be used with appropriate cultural guidance. We treat them as content your organization approves, not decoration chosen by the design team.

Research with New Zealand users across time zones

We run moderated usability sessions with New Zealand participants in their afternoon and evening, which is our working day, and unmoderated tests that participants complete in their own time. Findings are summarized with clips and prioritized fixes. Our UX research service covers interviews, usability testing and journey mapping.

What our UI/UX design covers

User research, interface design and design systems for web and mobile products people find easy to use.

  1. 01

    UX Strategy and Flows

User journeys, task flows and information architecture that define how people move through your product before visual design begins.

  2. 02

    Wireframing

Low-fidelity layouts that settle structure, content priority and navigation quickly, so feedback focuses on function rather than colours.

  3. 03

    Mobile App UI Design

iOS and Android interfaces that respect platform conventions, thumb reach and small screens while staying true to your brand.

  4. 04

    Web and SaaS UI Design

Dashboards, data tables, forms and settings screens designed for clarity, including the empty, loading and error states most designs forget.

  5. 05

    Design Systems

Reusable Figma components, tokens and usage guidelines that keep design consistent and speed up both designers and developers.

  6. 06

    UX Audit

A heuristic review of an existing product that highlights usability issues with annotated screenshots and a prioritised list of fixes.

  7. 07

    Accessible Design

Contrast, focus states, touch targets and readable type designed to WCAG guidelines from the very first wireframe onwards.

  8. 08

    Developer Handoff

Annotated Figma files, specs, assets and design reviews during development, so the built product matches the approved design.

How a project runs

Clear stages with a review at the end of each, so you always know what happens next and what it costs.

  1. 01

    Discover

Stakeholder and user interviews, analytics review and a competitor scan.

  2. 02

    Define

Personas, journeys, information architecture and key flows.

  3. 03

    Design

Wireframes, then high-fidelity UI and interactive prototypes in Figma.

    Validate

Usability tests on key flows, followed by design revisions.

  5. 05

    Handoff and Support

Design system, specs and ongoing reviews during development.

UI/UX Design in NZ, answered

Something else on your mind? Ask a consultant and get a reply within one business day.

Do you design to the New Zealand Government Web Standards?

Yes. We use WCAG 2.2 AA as the baseline, which matches the Web Accessibility Standard, and review the full standards with public sector clients at the start of a project. Designs include accessibility notes for developers, and we test prototypes with assistive technology before handing them over.

Can you include te reo Māori in our app or website design?

Yes. We design layouts, typography and components to support te reo Māori and bilingual content, and make sure macrons display correctly everywhere. The language itself should come from fluent speakers or translators your organization trusts, and cultural design elements from appropriate advisors.

Can design reviews happen during New Zealand business hours?

Yes. Live reviews and workshops happen in your afternoon, which overlaps with our morning. We share Figma links with comments enabled, so stakeholders can review in their own time, and we address feedback overnight, ready to discuss on the next call.
