Signs your business has outgrown ad hoc IT
Many small companies run IT through a helpful employee or an occasional freelancer. That works until it does not. Warning signs include nobody knowing all the passwords for critical systems, laptops set up differently for every employee, backups that have never been tested and new hires waiting days for accounts and equipment.
Security gaps are often the most serious issue. Shared accounts, no multi-factor authentication, outdated devices and unmanaged personal phones accessing company email create real risk, especially as phishing and ransomware increasingly target small and mid-size businesses rather than only large enterprises.
Productivity suffers quietly too. Slow Wi-Fi, recurring printer problems, software license confusion and unanswered support requests consume minutes every day across the whole team. Added up over a year, these interruptions cost far more than structured IT support would. They also frustrate good employees.
Growth multiplies these problems. Opening a new office, adding remote staff or meeting a large customer's security questionnaire becomes difficult without documented systems, standard device setups and clear ownership of IT responsibilities across the company. Each of these becomes harder the longer it is postponed.
