How to vet a Magento developer
Magento is powerful and complex, and poorly written customizations are the main reason stores become slow and hard to upgrade. Strong developers build custom modules installed through Composer, prefer plugins and observers over class rewrites, use declarative schema and service contracts, and never modify core files. Ask candidates to explain how a specific customization they built survived later upgrades.
Infrastructure knowledge matters more than on most platforms. Look for experience with Varnish, Redis, OpenSearch, cron, message queues and indexers, and with diagnosing slow pages from the server to the frontend. Experience with lighter frontend themes such as Hyvä is valuable for stores struggling with speed.
For B2B merchants, check familiarity with customer-specific pricing, shared catalogs, quick order and company accounts, whether on Adobe Commerce or through extensions on Magento Open Source. Our Magento development page explains the practices we follow on client stores. Ask which approach they recommend for your catalog size.
