Magento development for large and B2B ecommerce

Magento, now Adobe Commerce, is an open and highly extensible ecommerce platform built for stores with large catalogues, multiple storefronts, several currencies and complex pricing rules. It supports B2B features such as company accounts, quote requests and negotiated price lists, and its modular architecture lets developers customise almost any part of the buying process without hacking the core.

Magento makes sense for retailers and distributors with tens of thousands of SKUs, multi-brand or multi-country operations, and deep ERP integration needs. That power comes with higher hosting and development cost. For simpler direct-to-consumer stores, Shopify or WooCommerce is usually more economical, and we will recommend them when they fit better than Magento.

Nexzem builds custom Magento modules, implements B2B workflows, and modernises slow storefronts with Hyva themes that are far lighter than the default Luma frontend. We also handle version upgrades and security patches, which many Magento stores postpone until problems appear. Every change is tested on staging with production-like data before it reaches customers.

  • - [x] Handles complexity

Large catalogues, multiple stores and B2B rules are supported without workarounds.

  • - [x] Faster storefronts

Hyva frontends and caching make heavy Magento stores much quicker on mobile.

  • - [x] Upgrade-safe customisation

Clean modules instead of core hacks keep future upgrades practical.

  • - [x] Honest platform advice

If Magento is more than you need, we say so and suggest a simpler platform.

Magento Open Source vs Adobe Commerce

Magento Open Source is free to use and self-hosted, offering a powerful catalog, multi-store support and extensive customization, but you handle hosting, security and many features through extensions or custom development. Adobe Commerce is the licensed edition, available with Adobe-managed cloud infrastructure, and adds built-in B2B features, Page Builder for content, advanced promotions, customer segmentation and official support.

The right choice depends on revenue, complexity and internal capability. Merchants with complex B2B needs or large catalogs often justify Adobe Commerce, while others run successfully on Open Source with a strong development partner and good hosting. Total cost of ownership over several years, including hosting, licenses, extensions and development, is the fairest comparison.

Some merchants are better served elsewhere. If your requirements fit a hosted platform, Shopify can reduce maintenance significantly. Magento remains a strong option when you need deep customization, complex pricing, many store views and full control over hosting and data. We give an honest recommendation either way.

How we structure Magento customizations

Magento is extensible by design, and the way customizations are written decides how painful upgrades become. We build custom modules managed through Composer, prefer plugins and observers over class rewrites, use service contracts and declarative schema for database changes, and never modify core files. Configuration is exported to code so environments stay consistent.

Upgrades become manageable when customizations follow these rules. We keep an inventory of every extension and custom module, test upgrades on a copy of production data, and schedule them regularly instead of letting the store fall several versions behind supported releases.

Integrations use Magento's REST and GraphQL APIs, with heavy or asynchronous work such as ERP synchronization handled through message queues and cron jobs rather than during customer requests. Coding standards and static analysis run in CI, and every extension, purchased or custom, is reviewed for quality before installation.

  • Custom modules managed through Composer.
  • Plugins and observers instead of core rewrites.
  • Declarative schema and data patches for database changes.
  • Message queues for integrations and bulk operations.
  • Extension quality review before installation.

Magento hosting and security essentials

Magento performance depends heavily on infrastructure. Full-page caching with Varnish, Redis for sessions and cache, OpenSearch for catalog search, a CDN for static assets and correctly tuned PHP and database servers are the baseline. Frontend speed has improved greatly with lighter themes such as Hyvä, which replace the heavy default frontend stack.

Security requires regular attention. Adobe releases security patches for supported versions on a schedule, and stores that fall behind become targets for card-skimming attacks. Admin access should be locked down, extensions kept to trusted vendors and file integrity monitored. A maintenance plan with monthly patching and monitoring prevents most incidents.

  • Apply security patches promptly on supported versions.
  • Enforce two-factor authentication and a custom admin path.
  • Use a web application firewall and file integrity monitoring.
  • Keep PHP, OpenSearch and database versions within support.
  • Test performance before peak sales seasons.

What teams build with Magento

  • B2B catalog with customer-specific pricing

A distributor gives each business customer its own catalog, negotiated prices, quick order forms and credit limits, with orders flowing to the ERP automatically and sales reps placing orders on behalf of customers.

  • Multi-store, multi-language commerce

A brand runs several country stores from one Magento installation with shared products, local languages, currencies, prices and tax rules, managed centrally while regional teams control their own promotions and content.

  • PIM and ERP integration

Product data flows from a PIM and stock and pricing from the ERP into Magento through queued integrations, keeping a large catalog accurate without manual uploads or overnight inconsistencies between systems.

  • Frontend rebuild for speed

A slow Magento store replaces its heavy default frontend with a lightweight theme, cutting JavaScript dramatically and improving Core Web Vitals and conversion on mobile without changing the backend or extensions.

  • Marketplace for third-party sellers

A retailer adds selected third-party sellers to its Magento store through a marketplace extension, with seller onboarding, commission rules and split order fulfillment, expanding its range without holding extra inventory.

Magento development FAQs

Something else on your mind? Ask a consultant and get a reply within one business day.

Is Magento right for our store?

Magento fits large catalogues, multi-store or multi-country setups and complex B2B requirements. If your store is mainly direct-to-consumer with a moderate catalogue, Shopify or WooCommerce will usually cost less to run. We advise after reviewing your needs.

What drives Magento development cost?

Catalogue size, number of storefronts, custom modules, ERP integration, theme work, upgrade distance and hosting setup all affect effort. A fixed quote follows a free consultation and store audit.

Why is our Magento store so slow?

Common causes are heavy themes, poorly written extensions, missing caching and misconfigured search or indexers. An audit identifies the biggest issues, and Hyva can make a large difference to frontend speed.

How often should Magento be upgraded?

Security patches should be applied soon after release, and staying within supported versions is important. We plan upgrades on a schedule so they never pile up into a large project.

Can you move us off Magento?

Yes. If Magento's complexity no longer fits, we can migrate products, customers, orders and URLs to Shopify or WooCommerce with redirects in place.

What is the difference between Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce?

Magento Open Source is the free, self-hosted edition with a strong core feature set. Adobe Commerce is the licensed edition that adds B2B tools, Page Builder, advanced marketing features, cloud hosting options and official Adobe support. Both share the same core architecture and extension model.

What is Hyvä and should we use it?

Hyvä is a modern frontend theme for Magento that replaces the default frontend stack with a much lighter approach, greatly reducing JavaScript and improving page speed. It suits most stores seeking better performance, though some extensions need compatible versions or adjustments.

We work with clients across the USA, UK, Australia, UAE, New Zealand and India.
