ASO definition
App Store Optimization (ASO) is the process of improving a mobile app's visibility and conversion rate in app stores such as Apple's App Store and Google Play. It covers keyword research, the app title and description, screenshots, preview videos, ratings and reviews, so more people find the app in store search and choose to install it.
How does ASO work?
ASO has two goals. The first is visibility: ranking for relevant searches and appearing in category charts and recommendations. The second is conversion: persuading people who land on the store listing to install. Both matter, because a high ranking with a weak listing wastes impressions, and a great listing nobody sees earns nothing. Store search is one of the main ways people discover apps, so small improvements compound.
The two stores index different fields. On the App Store, the title and subtitle are limited to 30 characters each, and a hidden keyword field allows 100 characters; the long description is not used for search ranking. On Google Play, the 30-character title, 80-character short description and the full description of up to 4,000 characters are all indexed, so natural keyword use in the description matters.
Key ASO ranking and conversion factors
- App title, subtitle or short description containing the main keyword.
- The App Store keyword field, without repeating words already in the title.
- Icon, screenshots and preview video that show the core value in seconds.
- Ratings, review volume and recent review sentiment.
- Install velocity, retention and engagement signals.
- Technical quality, including crash and ANR rates on Android.
- Localized listings for each target market and language.
- Regular updates and in-app events or promotional content.
ASO vs SEO
Both aim to be found in search, but the environments differ. SEO targets web search engines, with billions of pages, backlinks and rich content. ASO works inside closed stores with short text fields, limited ranking signals and a listing page designed to convert in seconds. Keyword research overlaps, and a strong website with deep links and app banners can feed installs, but each discipline needs its own tools and testing.
How to improve app store rankings
Treat the listing like a landing page and test it. Apple's Product Page Optimization and Google Play's store listing experiments let you test icons, screenshots and copy against each other, while custom product pages on iOS match the listing to each ad campaign's message.
- Research keywords with tools such as AppTweak or Sensor Tower, balancing relevance and competition.
- Study competitor listings for gaps in messaging and visuals.
- Ask for ratings at happy moments using the official in-app review prompts.
- Reply to reviews, especially negative ones, and fix the issues they raise.
- Localize screenshots and text for major markets, not just translate them.
- Reduce crashes and slow startup, which affect both ratings and visibility.
Example: a fitness app listing
A home workout app ranks poorly for "home workout" because its title is only the brand name. The team adds the phrase to the title, moves secondary terms into the keyword field, replaces generic screenshots with ones showing a 20-minute plan and progress tracking, and prompts for reviews after a completed workout streak. Each change is tested in store experiments before rollout. Nexzem includes ASO setup, analytics and review prompts in app launches so store visibility is planned rather than an afterthought.
